Bertha H. Lippincott Coles was concerned with the quality of life of both off duty and wounded or convalescing soldiers. She was one of the founders of the United Service Club, a recreational club offering lodging to soldiers on leave, and was very active in that and related organizations. She also opened her home 'Greenway' for "entertainment weekends" and evenings to soldiers convalescing in area hospitals or on leave.
